The orange juice market in CIS showed initial stability from 2018 to 2019, with volume around 53 thousand liters. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 spurred demand for citrus products, leading to a 13% market growth to 59 thousand liters. This trend continued into 2021, with volume jumping 21% to 72 thousand liters, supported by sustained consumer interest in health-oriented beverages.

In 2022, the market contracted sharply by 37% to 45 thousand liters. The following year saw a strong rebound, with volume rising 28% to 58 thousand liters. This recovery was driven by a significant increase in domestic production, which grew by 36% to 42 thousand liters, as local manufacturers expanded output amid ongoing challenges in importing concentrate due to logistical constraints and rising global raw material prices. Some producers also began shifting to adjacent product categories not subject to excise tax.

Entering 2024, the market faced unprecedented global price surges for orange juice, triggered by adverse weather and disease affecting orange trees in Brazil—a key supplier of concentrate to the region. Brazilian orange production fell by 25%, tightening supplies and pushing up costs. In response, the Moscow Exchange launched orange juice futures in June 2024 to help hedge price volatility. Simultaneously, Russian juice production continued to grow, with a 44% increase in early 2024, while new quality and labeling standards from Roskachestvo aimed to enhance consumer trust.

Orange juice production in the CIS has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 20 966 thousand liters, marking a 24.2% increase from 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 81.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 21.9%.

Orange juice production in the CIS has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 58 579 thousand US dollars, which is 38.7% higher than in 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production grew by 85.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 22.9%.

After two years of growth, CIS orange juice exports declined in 2020. Shipments totaled 1 961 thousand liters, down 27.0% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 9.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.9%. The peak was in 2019 at 2 686 thousand liters, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 34.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, the export market for orange juice in kind was diverse. Ukraine accounted for 6.2% of exports, Romania for 6.0%, and Georgia for 1.7%, together making up just 13.9% of total flows. The remaining 86.1% was distributed among numerous other countries.

Following two years of growth, CIS orange juice exports in value terms fell in 2020. The region exported 5 480 thousand US dollars worth of orange juice, an 18.4% decrease from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports rose by 11.8%, with an average annual rate of 3.8%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 6 720 thousand US dollars, and the largest annual increase also occurred in 2019 at 22.8%.

During 2017-2020, Romania, Ukraine, and Georgia were key buyers of CIS orange juice in value terms, with shares of 5.9%, 5.8%, and 1.8%, respectively. However, their combined share reached only 13.6% of total exports, while the remaining 86.4% was spread across many other trading partners.
