Earlier Report Observations

The Caribbean market for unfermented orange juice, measured in value, saw moderate growth in 2019 but contracted sharply in 2020 to $38.0 million, down 21% from the previous year. This decline coincided with a large Brazilian orange harvest and an underlying trend of decreasing consumption, which pushed down global prices for orange juice concentrate and reduced the overall market value.

Market value rebounded in 2021 and then expanded rapidly, reaching $63.5 million in 2022 and $74.4 million in 2023. The surge in 2023 was primarily driven by a worldwide shortage of orange concentrate, caused by a decade-long decline in U.S. production, which fell to just 16 million boxes in the 2022/2023 season. Additionally, juice producers shifted their focus toward more lucrative not-from-concentrate juice, implementing delivery quotas to manage demand that exceeded available supply, further tightening the market and supporting higher prices.

Entering 2024, the market continued to face supply constraints. The spread of citrus greening disease ('yellow dragon') significantly reduced orange yields in Florida and Brazil, the world's main suppliers, leading to sustained high juice prices. Simultaneously, Egypt reduced its export subsidies and prioritized local processing, while expanding its citrus cultivation and cold storage infrastructure. A forecasted 24% drop in the Brazilian 2024-2025 harvest pointed to ongoing scarcity, maintaining upward pressure on costs for the Caribbean market.
