Earlier Report Observations

Egypt's production of raw groundnuts fluctuated between 2018 and 2023, starting at 209.8 thousand tons in 2018 and reaching 273 thousand tons in 2023. A significant production increase in 2020 to 219.5 thousand tons was driven by expanded domestic output and a depreciation of the Egyptian pound, which made exports more attractive and contributed to a drop in domestic prices. This currency effect and greater supply boosted exports to 39.1 thousand tons that year, reducing the volume available on the local market to 182.7 thousand tons. After a further production rise to 251.5 thousand tons in 2021, output dipped in 2022 before surging again in 2023.

The 2023 production peak of 273 thousand tons coincided with a sharp price increase to around 80 EGP per kilogram, attributed to strong export demand, contraction of cultivated area, and broader food inflation. Export volumes varied considerably, from a low of 8.1 thousand tons in 2019 to a high of 75.5 thousand tons in 2024. In 2024, authorities implemented measures to regulate peanut exports, including a temporary ban until June and stricter aflatoxin controls for shipments to the European Union, aiming to ensure compliance with international standards and stabilize local prices.
