The market for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts in Mali showed considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023, with annual production moving from 491.5 thousand tonnes in 2018 down to 345.2 thousand tonnes in 2021 before recovering to 454.7 thousand tonnes in 2023. Key drivers included government-led seed distribution and the introduction of improved crop varieties, which directly supported output levels during recovery years.

In 2018, the National Agriculture Directorate supplied 3 500 tonnes of certified seeds, including groundnuts, to farmers, contributing to the high production volume that year. A significant production rebound in 2020 followed the diffusion of four new groundnut varieties designed to enhance yields. The market expanded again in 2022 after presidential decisions set record purchase prices for cotton, encouraging producers across the agricultural sector. Further growth in 2023 coincided with advanced trials of 47 short-cycle groundnut varieties under the national Groundnut Program, aimed at strengthening the entire value chain.

Looking ahead to 2024, Mali approved major contracts for the N’Débougou IV agricultural rehabilitation project and launched the PRTD-Mali program to promote sustainable investment in degraded lands, indicating continued institutional focus on supporting groundnut production and market development.
