Earlier Report Observations

Egyptian sugar cane production for human consumption began the period at 15.8 million tons in 2018 but fell to 15.3 million tons the following year. This decline was driven by challenges in agricultural production, including high fertilizer prices, irrigation problems, and rising labor costs, which reduced the amount of cane available for supply and processing.

Output recovered to nearly 16.0 million tons by 2021, though growth remained modest as a portion of the harvest was directed toward alternative uses such as cattle feed and ethanol production. Continued supply constraints contributed to another dip in production, which reached 15.6 million tons in 2022.

A sharp contraction followed in 2023, with production dropping to 14.2 million tons. This was primarily due to a dramatic fall in cane deliveries to sugar mills, which plummeted to only 10 thousand tons in the 2024 season and forced some mills to suspend operations. In response, the government set a fixed cane price of EGP 1,500 per ton in 2024 and aggressively expanded sugar beet cultivation to over 780 thousand feddans, aiming to reduce reliance on cane and achieve sugar self-sufficiency.
