The sugar beet market in Egypt expanded significantly from 10.4 million tons in 2018 to 12.2 million tons in 2019, supported by increased cultivation areas and higher crop yields. The strategic shift toward sugar beet as a more water-efficient alternative to sugarcane further encouraged this growth. However, in 2020, market volume fell to 10.3 million tons as consumer sugar consumption was rationalized and the government intervened to stabilize strategic reserves.

A sharp recovery followed in 2021, with volume surging to 14.2 million tons, directly fueled by heightened state support for beet farmers through financial incentives and raised delivery prices, alongside directives to boost processing companies' capacity by 30%. After a decrease to 12.5 million tons in 2022, production climbed again to 14.1 million tons in 2023, driven by the modernization of beet sugar plants to increase throughput and efficiency, and the continued national strategy to achieve sugar self-sufficiency through large-scale planting of high-yielding, climate-resilient beet varieties.

In 2020, Egypt produced 10 284 thousand tonnes of sugar beet, marking a 16.0% decrease from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 5.3%, which translates to an average annual decline of 1.8%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 12 247 thousand tonnes, with the largest year-on-year increase of 18.0% also occurring that year.

Egypt's sugar beet production value declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the output was valued at 1 544 million US dollars, representing a 15.5% drop compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, the production value decreased by 15%, averaging an annual decline of 5.3%. The peak value was reached in 2018 at 1 935 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 6.5% during this period.

Exports sugar beet from Egypt

Egypt's sugar beet export volumes fell for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 137 tonnes, a sharp 77.0% decline from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports plummeted by 98.3%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -74.3%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Saudi Arabia was the primary buyer of sugar beet from Egypt, accounting for 75.7% of total exports in volume terms, while other partners held relatively smaller shares.

Egypt's sugar beet export value continued to decline for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 21 thousand US dollars, a sudden 76.9% drop from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value decreased by 98.5%, equating to an average annual decline of 75.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Saudi Arabia remained the leading destination for Egypt's sugar beet exports in value terms, capturing 83.7% of total flows, with the remainder fragmented across other markets.
