The market volume for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts in SADC remained relatively stable from 2018 to 2020, fluctuating around 2 180 thousand tonnes. A significant increase occurred in 2021, when volume jumped to 2 432 thousand tonnes, representing growth of over 12%. However, this was followed by a contraction in the subsequent two years, with volume falling to 2 362 thousand tonnes in 2022 and further to 2 246 thousand tonnes in 2023.

In value terms, the market experienced a different trajectory. After a decline from 1 948 million US dollars in 2018 to 1 798 million in 2020, it recovered sharply to 2 172 million in 2021. The most notable drop came in 2022, when the market value plunged to 1 839 million dollars, likely reflecting changes in groundnut prices or shifts in product mix. A modest recovery to 1 871 million dollars was observed in 2023.

Recent industry context highlights structural factors influencing the SADC groundnut sector. These include fluctuating production areas and yields in key countries like Malawi and South Africa, persistent challenges with aflatoxin contamination affecting export quality to markets such as the EU, and a fragmented market structure. Concurrently, rising consumer demand for plant-based proteins presents a potential growth driver for groundnut products.

The largest decline occurred in 2018 with a 1.9% decrease, while the largest increase was seen in 2019 with a 0.8% rise.

In 2020, production was valued at 1 828 M $ US, showing a gradual reduction of 6.0% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production decreased by 4.6%, equating to an annualized rate of 1.5%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 1 955 M $ US, which also saw the largest increase of 2.1%.

Market performance showed noticeable fluctuations during the period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2018 at 47.2 K t, with the largest decline of 3.4% that year. In 2019, exports saw the largest increase of 82.6%. By 2020, not roasted and not cooked groundnuts shipments from SADC to abroad stood at 100.8 K t, representing a robust advance of 16.9% compared to 2019. The overall fluctuation between the peak in 2020 and trough in 2018 was 2.1 times.
