Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for homogenised jams, jellies, marmalades, purées and pastes in Indonesia fluctuated between 2018 and 2023, starting at 2 748 t in 2018 and reaching a peak of 3 400 t in 2021, before falling to 2 199 t by 2023.

The notable 29% market expansion in 2021 aligned with a shift in consumer preferences toward products rich in flavor and perceived health benefits, alongside innovation in fruit and spice variants. Subsequently, the market contracted by 16% in 2022 as new BPOM regulations on heavy metal contamination and permitted food additives such as sorbitol syrup and propylene glycol came into force, raising compliance costs and affecting product registration for both domestic and imported items. Updated labeling rules under BPOM Regulation No. 20 of 2021 also introduced additional requirements for producers.

Parallel to these changes, imports fell sharply from 748 t in 2018 to just 76 t in 2023, partly influenced by the same regulatory tightening and a government policy requiring shopping centers and supermarkets to source 80% of their goods domestically. Exports also varied, declining from 967 t in 2018 to 301 t in 2021 before recovering to 393 t in 2023, reflecting changing international demand and production adjustments.
