Earlier Report Observations

In 2018 and 2019, Iran's grape market volume grew to around 1.8 million tons, supported by new export incentives to Russia such as low-interest loans and insurance, which made overseas sales more profitable and encouraged production. Expanded cultivation of economical and export-oriented grape varieties, along with growth in the domestic wholesale market for grapes and derived products, contributed to higher supply.

From 2020 to 2022, the domestic market volume contracted by roughly a third, falling to 1.3 million tons. Increased exports during this period, partly driven by the development of sterile processing lines for shipments to Europe, reduced the amount available for local consumption. Trading companies actively pursued opportunities in Russia and Gulf states, further sustaining export demand, while improved standard packaging and professional palletization helped maintain product quality. Additionally, changing climatic conditions adversely affected yields, leading to lower production. In response, growers accelerated the adoption of resilient varieties like Mondrap to better withstand weather fluctuations.

The market rebounded in 2023, with volume rising 11% to 1.4 million tons as production increased to 1.5 million tons and exports moderated slightly. This recovery brought the market close to its 2021 level.
