Earlier Report Observations

Cuban grape production began the period at 20 148 tons in 2018, declined to 19 502 tons in 2019, then recovered to 24 000 tons in 2020 and a peak of 24 204 tons in 2021. The total market volume for grapes mirrored this movement, falling to 19 798 tons in 2019 before rising to 24 340 tons in 2020 and stabilizing near 24 386 tons in 2021.

Production fell again to 19 895 tons in 2022 and further to 19 393 tons in 2023. However, the total market volume increased to 21 878 tons in 2023, driven by a jump in imports to 2 485 tons. This occurred during a period of economic contraction, where a declining GDP, high oil and food prices, and a dual currency system that made grapes available only in U.S. dollars affected local production and consumer access.
