Earlier Report Observations
The grape market volume in Libya showed considerable fluctuation between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 33 068 tons in 2018, it rose to 37 569 tons the following year before dipping to 35 237 tons in 2020. A recovery followed, with the market reaching 38 210 tons in 2021 and peaking at 41 258 tons in 2022, after which it declined to 38 610 tons in 2023. This volatility was primarily driven by changing import volumes, as domestic production gradually decreased from 31 500 tons to 30 677 tons over the same period.
In 2024, several developments influenced the grape market. Consumer perception of black grapes shifted, as they were previously associated with wine, leading to a reported 70% increase in local sales from production. Additionally, a decline in fig production and rising fig prices prompted some consumers to switch to locally grown grapes as a more affordable alternative. These factors likely supported domestic consumption and may have contributed to the reduction in import volumes, which fell to 5 619 tons in 2024.
