The grape market in Montenegro contracted significantly from 29 173 t in 2018 to 19 696 t in 2023, a reduction of over 9 000 t or approximately 32%. This decline was not uniform, with periods of both decrease and partial recovery.

After an initial drop in 2019, the market shrank further in 2020 before rebounding by 9.4% in 2021. However, this recovery was short-lived, as volumes fell sharply by 12.4% in 2022 and then by 19.3% in 2023, reaching the lowest point in the period.

Domestic production, which accounts for the bulk of market supply, mirrored this trend, falling from 25 770 t to 16 283 t. Imports fluctuated but ended the period lower, while exports remained minimal after a steep decline from 2018 levels.

In 2019, Montenegro's grape production reached its lowest point at 21 865 tons. The following year, in 2020, production increased by 3.9% to 22 711 tons. Over the 2017-2020 period, overall production declined by 3.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.1%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 25 770 tons, which represented a 9.7% increase from the previous year. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, when production fell by 15.2%.

Grape production in Montenegro declined for the second consecutive year in 2020, with output valued at 19 191 thousand US dollars, down 3.5% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value decreased by 9.7%, with an average annual decline of 3.4%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 22 061 thousand US dollars, marking a 3.8% increase. The most substantial decline occurred in 2019, when production value fell by 9.8%.

Montenegro's grape exports showed significant volatility during this period. In 2019, exports hit their lowest point at 249 tons, representing a sharp 73.7% decline. The following year, in 2020, exports surged by 189.2% to 721 tons. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 949 tons, creating a 3.8-fold difference between the peak in 2018 and the low in 2019.

From 2017 to 2020, Serbia dominated Montenegro's grape exports, accounting for 85.9% of total export volumes. Other markets represented relatively modest shares during this period.

Montenegro's grape export values experienced notable fluctuations. In 2019, export value reached its minimum at 227 thousand US dollars, dropping 72.1% from the previous year. The following year, in 2020, export value jumped 168.6% to 609 thousand US dollars. The peak export value was recorded in 2018 at 813 thousand US dollars, creating a 3.6-fold difference between the high in 2018 and the low in 2019.

Between 2017 and 2020, Serbia remained the primary buyer of Montenegrin grapes in value terms, accounting for 84.1% of total export value. The remaining exports were distributed across various other countries.

From 2017 to 2020, North Macedonia was the main source of grape imports to Montenegro, accounting for 71.6% of total import volumes. The remaining imports came from various smaller markets.

The following year, in 2020, import value fell sharply by 41.6% to 1 573 thousand US dollars.
