The Egyptian grape market started the period with high production of 1 641 thousand tons in 2018, supported by efforts to increase yield per acre by 40% and expand export opportunities. However, by 2020, market volume dropped sharply to 1 082 thousand tons due to disruptions from the global COVID-19 pandemic affecting supply chains and demand.

Recovery began in 2021 as market volume rose to 1 364 thousand tons, driven by high global demand for table grapes which encouraged Egyptian growers to expand cultivation and exports. In 2022, the introduction of new grape varieties with higher yields and record exports exceeding 120 thousand tons, largely due to substantial purchases by Russia, pushed the market volume to a peak of 1 675 thousand tons. Concurrently, there were calls for legislative changes to facilitate the import of modern seedlings aimed at boosting export capacity.

In 2023, the market experienced a slight correction to 1 602 thousand tons, remaining well above pre-pandemic levels.

Egypt's grape production volume declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 1 184 thousand tonnes of grapes, marking a sharp 25.8% decrease from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production fell by 31.7%, which translates to an annualized decline rate of 11.9%.

Grape production in Egypt declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 2 616 million US dollars, representing a 20.5% decrease compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value dropped by 23.2%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -8.4%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 3 783 million US dollars, which saw the largest increase of 11.1% that year.

Exports grapes from Egypt

Exports in kind, K t

Egypt exported 105.8 thousand tonnes of grapes in 2020, showing a modest decrease of 6.9% from the prior year. From 2017 to 2020, exports declined by 12.5%, with a CAGR of -4.4%. The lowest volume was in 2018 at 95.3 thousand tonnes, which experienced the largest decline of 21.3%. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest increase of 19.4%.

During 2017-2020, the United Kingdom (25.5% of exports in kind), the Netherlands (24.1%), and Germany (9.6%) were the primary markets for Egypt's grape exports, collectively accounting for 59.2% of total export volumes.

Egypt exported 233.8 million US dollars worth of grapes in 2020, remaining nearly unchanged from 2019. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 219.7 million US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 7.6%. In 2019, exports increased by 6.7%, marking the largest rise during this period.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Kingdom (25.6% of exports in value terms), the Netherlands (24.1%), and Germany (9.7%) held the largest shares of Egypt's grape exports by value, together comprising 59.4% of total export flows.

Egypt's imports of foreign grapes increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 4.0 thousand tonnes, up 2.9% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 40.2%, with a CAGR of 11.9%.

Egypt's grape imports increased in value for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 8.9 million US dollars, which was 1.8% higher than in 2019. From 2017 to 2020, import value rose by 53.3%, with a CAGR of 15.3%.
