Earlier Report Observations

The Mexican grape market experienced relative stability in volume from 2018 to 2020, with market size hovering around 420 thousand tons. The enactment of the Viticulture Promotion Law in May 2018 aimed to double grape cultivation area, supporting production growth. However, increased exports to the United States, which absorbed 99% of Mexico's fresh grape shipments, kept domestic availability steady. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted export channels due to border closures and reduced U.S. demand, leading to a slight rise in domestic market volume as fewer grapes were shipped abroad.

In 2021, a sharp drop in exports to only 27 thousand tons dramatically expanded the domestic market to 485 thousand tons, driven by continued challenges in U.S. demand and international competition. The introduction of new varieties like Sweet Globe and Sweet Celebrations began influencing seasonal dynamics. The following year, unfavorable weather conditions delayed the harvest and reduced production, but growing imports and heightened domestic consumption, partly due to lower export volumes, cushioned the market size decline to 447 thousand tons. By 2023, exports rebounded strongly to over 226 thousand tons, pulling the market volume down to 259 thousand tons as grapes flowed out of the country.

In subsequent years, industry efforts focused on boosting the domestic market share, with plans to increase local consumption from 29% to 40-45%. Regulatory advancements in securities market reform aimed to improve financing access for agricultural businesses. Internationally, Mexico joined Peru and Chile to launch the Global Grape Group in 2025, targeting sustainable growth in global table grape consumption amid oversupply challenges.
