The grape market in India expanded steadily from 2.8 million tonnes in 2018 to over 3.0 million tonnes by 2020. This initial growth was supported by multiple regional and bilateral trade agreements along with WTO tariff reductions, which improved market access and boosted export opportunities for Indian grapes.

In the early 2020s, the implementation of a residue monitoring plan for pesticide residues and the availability of modern packhouse facilities with automatic forced air systems enhanced the quality and safety standards of Indian grapes. These improvements strengthened the country's position in key export markets like the Netherlands and the UAE, supporting continued market growth.

The market volume accelerated sharply to 3.5 million tonnes in 2023, driven by a significant expansion of vineyard acreage due to favorable climatic conditions and strong price realization. The emergence of new grape varieties and diversification into processed products such as juice and wine, coupled with the entry of new players facilitated by agritech platforms, further stimulated production and consumption.

India's grape production volume increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 3 181 K t of grapes, representing a 4.6% improvement over 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 8.9%, equating to an annualized rate of 2.9%. The lowest production volume was recorded in 2018 at 2 920 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 0.1%.

In 2020, India's grape output was valued at 4 902 M $ US, up by 11.5% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production value increased by 13.3%, with an annualized growth rate of 4.3%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 7.9%.

In 2020, India's grape export volume was 204.9 K t, marking a significant decline of 14.3% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 2.1%, equating to an annualized rate of 0.7%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 194.7 K t, while the peak was in 2019 at 239.1 K t, which also saw the largest increase of 22.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, India's grape export structure in volume terms was highly diversified. The Netherlands (28.4% of exports), Russia (13.1%), and the United Kingdom (7.7%) together accounted for 49.2% of total flows, with the remaining 50.8% distributed among numerous smaller partner countries.

After two years of growth, India's grape exports declined in 2020, amounting to 315.7 M $ US, a modest drop of 8.7% from 2019. The highest export value was recorded in 2019 at 345.7 M $ US, which also saw the largest increase of 8.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands (31.6% of exports in value terms), Russia (13.0%), and the United Kingdom (8.9%) together absorbed 53.5% of India's total grape export value, making them the primary destinations.

India's grape imports increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country imported 35.1 K t of grapes, reflecting a moderate advance of 6.1% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 50.8%, equating to an annualized rate of 14.7%.

After two years of gains, India's grape imports declined in 2020, totaling 112.4 M $ US, down by 6.7% from the previous year. Over the period 2017-2020, imports increased by 28.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 8.8%. The highest import value was recorded in 2019 at 120.4 M $ US, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 21.9%.
