Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, Egypt's orange market volume increased from 2.3 million tons to 3.2 million tons. This growth was primarily driven by a 10% expansion in cultivated area and improved irrigation techniques, which boosted orchard productivity and raised total production to nearly 4 million tons in 2020, increasing domestic availability despite a concurrent drop in exports.

The market contracted to 2.4 million tons in 2021 due to reported challenges in local production and heightened competition from South Africa, Spain, and Lebanon in key export markets like Saudi Arabia. The following year, a continued focus on expanding fresh orange exports, particularly to Spain, further reduced domestic supply, lowering the market volume to 2.3 million tons.

By 2023, the market rebounded to 2.8 million tons. A 50% rise in raw material and packing station costs, linked to supply shortages and climatic changes, pushed up export prices by about $100 per ton and dampened foreign demand. This decline in exports allowed more oranges to remain in the domestic market, driving the volume increase.
