Grape wine market in Tunisia

In 2018, grape wine production in Tunisia stood at 32 000 thousand liters, following a reported 30% increase in the previous season. An ongoing cellar modernization program, launched in 2002 with €12 million in investments, aimed at improving wine quality for international markets. Production then rose to 37 000 thousand liters in 2019, supported by the recognized quality of Tunisian grapes and the growing international reputation of Tunisian wines, which were named among the world's best.

After peaking in 2019, production fell to 31 000 thousand liters in 2020 and 28 000 thousand liters in 2021, then rebounded to 33 000 thousand liters in 2022.

In 2023, production slightly decreased to 31 900 thousand liters. By 2024, high inflation pushed up wine prices, while climate change affected grape production, and diversification of export markets for fruits including grapes offered new opportunities for the sector.

Tunisia's grape wine production experienced a two-year period of growth before declining. In 2019, production reached its peak at 37 000 K l, marking a significant increase of 15.6%. However, by 2020, production had fallen to 31 000 K l, representing a sharp decline of 16.2% compared to the previous year.

The export market for grape wine from Tunisia showed considerable volatility during the observed period. In 2018, exports peaked at 562.0 K l, with an 18.0% increase. By 2020, exports had dropped to their lowest point at 97.3 K l, down 77.2% from 2019. This created a substantial 5.8-fold difference between the highest and lowest export volumes.

From 2017 to 2020, France, Germany, and Turkey were the primary markets for Tunisia's grape wine exports in volume terms. France accounted for 34.0% of exports, Germany for 28.2%, and Turkey for 4.5%. Together, these three countries represented 66.7% of Tunisia's total grape wine export flows.

Tunisia's grape wine exports in value terms declined for the third consecutive year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 63.8%, averaging an annual decline of 28.7%. In 2020, export value fell to 1 375 K $ US, a 54.0% contraction compared to 2019.

During the 2017-2020 period, France, Germany, and Turkey were the largest buyers of Tunisian grape wine in value terms. France accounted for 41.4% of export value, Germany for 3.8%, and Turkey for 2.8%. However, their combined share was only 48.0% of total export value, indicating a diversified market structure with many smaller buyers.

Imports grape wine to Tunisia

Tunisia's grape wine imports in volume terms showed significant changes between 2017 and 2020. Imports peaked in 2019 at 220.4 K l, with a 42.5% increase. By 2020, imports had fallen to 79.5 K l, down 63.9% from the previous year. Over the entire period, imports decreased by 61.4%, averaging an annual decline of 27.2%.

By 2020, import value had fallen to 1 101 K $ US, down 39.2% from the previous year. Over the four-year period, imports decreased by 36.4%, averaging an annual decline of 14.0%.
