The Austrian grape wine market volume declined sharply in 2019 to 240.8 million liters, down from 292.4 million liters the previous year. This drop was linked to a vintage of average size that reduced domestic production, alongside record export volumes which diverted more wine abroad. In 2020, despite the COVID-19 pandemic severely restricting the key gastronomy channel, the market proved resilient and grew slightly to 243.4 million liters. A rapid shift to retail and home consumption, with online wine sales surging, compensated for the loss of restaurant demand.

Market volume softened again in 2021 to 240.0 million liters as the hospitality sector's recovery remained slow, even though direct-to-consumer wine delivery expanded significantly. A clear rebound followed in 2022, with volume reaching 255.2 million liters. This growth was supported by a promising vintage, robust demand, and enhanced international exposure from major trade events like the VieVinum fair. The market then saw a modest contraction to 249.9 million liters in 2023.

In 2020, Austria produced 240 million liters of grape wine, marking a 3.2% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017–2020 period, production declined by 3.5%, averaging an annual decrease of 1.2%. The lowest production was recorded in 2019 at 232 million liters, while the highest was in 2018 at 275 million liters. The most significant drop occurred in 2019 with a 15.6% decrease, whereas the largest rise was in 2018 with a 10.8% increase.

Grape wine exports from Austria grew for the third consecutive year in 2020, reaching 71 420 thousand liters, a solid 10.1% uptick compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports surged by 46.8%, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 13.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland were the top destinations for Austria's grape wine exports by volume. Germany accounted for 62.9% of exports, the Netherlands for 6.8%, and Switzerland for 6.5%, together making up 76.2% of total export flows.

In 2020, Austria's grape wine exports in value terms stood at 226.7 million US dollars, showing a modest 4.4% gain from the previous year.
