Earlier Report Observations

The Tunisian alcoholic beer market expanded from 172.7 million liters in 2018 to 204.3 million liters in 2019. This growth was fueled by rising consumption, reinforced by the state-owned Société de Fabrication des Boissons de Tunisie (SFBT), which controlled about 85% of the national market and reported record revenue. A strong consumer preference for beer, accounting for 68% of alcohol consumption in the country, further supported market expansion despite persistent sales restrictions on specific religious days.

After stabilizing at 202.1 million liters in 2020, the market volume declined to 195.4 million liters in 2021. The drop was linked to high taxation on alcoholic beverages, which increased prices and restrained legal consumption. During this period, SFBT maintained its dominant position, while the entry of new products like the strong beer Berber Forte launched by SONOBRA diversified the market offering.

Market volume recovered to 202.7 million liters in 2022, supported by entrenched consumption habits and SFBT's market dominance. However, the Finance Law for 3, enacted in December 2022, introduced a 5% advance payment on alcohol sales, leading to price increases and contributing to a contraction to 192.5 million liters in 2023. In 2024, product diversification continued with the launch of the Hard Seltzer 'Sunset' by Sonobra, while strict regulations on alcohol sales and distribution remained in effect.
