Earlier Report Observations

The grape wine market in Western Europe saw considerable volume shifts from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 4.3 billion liters in 2018, consumption jumped to 6.5 billion liters in 2019 and further to 7.0 billion liters in 2020. A pronounced decline followed in 2021, bringing the market down to 5.3 billion liters, before a strong recovery to 7.9 billion liters in 2022. The market then stabilized near 7.8 billion liters in 2023.

These fluctuations were closely tied to changes in domestic production and international trade. Production fell from 5.9 billion liters in 2018 to 5.0 billion liters in 2019, dipped to a low of 4.5 billion liters in 2021, then rebounded to 6.3 billion liters in 2022. Concurrently, exports dropped sharply from 4.5 billion liters in 2018 to 1.6 billion liters in 2019, significantly reducing outflows and increasing domestic supply, while imports held steady between 2.8 and 3.1 billion liters annually.

Entering 2024, the market was influenced by several key developments. New EU regulations requiring ingredient lists on wine labels came into effect, responding to consumer demand for greater transparency. Preferences continued to shift towards sustainable, organic, and low-alcohol wines, and online sales channels expanded. In major producing regions like Spain's Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura, white wine output increased, supporting production capacity. However, inflationary pressure led to higher prices, affecting consumption patterns across the region.
