The market for fresh grapes in Ukraine contracted steadily from 494.5 thousand tons in 2018 to 275.5 thousand tons in 2023. The most significant drop occurred between 2018 and 2020, when the market lost over 168 thousand tons, followed by a more gradual decline in subsequent years.

Military actions in the country delayed critical amendments to viticulture legislation, which reduced investment in new large-scale vineyards from 2020 onward. The ongoing conflict directly impacted grape processing and consumer demand, contributing to the overall market contraction. Additionally, competitive pressure from imports, such as those from Belarus, placed further strain on domestic producers.

Throughout the period, Ukraine pursued legislative harmonization with EU standards, including planned changes to grape variety classifications, the introduction of new labeling rules, and the adoption of a comprehensive 'euro-integration' law on grapes and wine. These measures aimed to simplify entrepreneurship and enhance transparency but were unable to reverse the market's downward trend in the short term.

Fresh grape production in Ukraine declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 281.0 thousand tonnes, marking a significant 23.3% drop from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 31.4%, with an average annual decline of 11.8%. The peak was in 2018 at 467.6 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 14.2%.

Exports fresh grapes to Ukraine

Ukraine's fresh grape exports decreased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country exported 60 tonnes, down 5.7% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 26.3%, with an average annual decline of 9.7%. The highest export volume was in 2018 at 88 tonnes, which also recorded the largest increase of 7.9%. The sharpest drop occurred in 2019, with a 27.6% decrease.

From 2017 to 2020, Belarus was the central partner for Ukraine's fresh grape exports in volume, accounting for 73.0% of total flows, while other markets played a smaller role.

In 2020, Ukraine's fresh grape export value totaled 17 thousand US dollars, a steep 65.3% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value declined by 66.6%, with an average annual drop of 30.6%. The largest increase was in 2019, at 6.9%.

Imports fresh grapes in Ukraine

Ukraine's fresh grape imports rose for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports reached 45 088 tonnes, up 4.0% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 37.7%, with an average annual increase of 11.2%. The lowest import volume was in 2018 at 26 961 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 17.7%. The biggest jump occurred in 2019, with a 60.9% increase.

During 2017-2020, Turkey held the dominant position in Ukraine's fresh grape imports by volume, accounting for 77.8% of total flows, while the rest was distributed among various smaller destinations.

Ukraine's fresh grape import value increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 44 909 thousand US dollars, a dramatic 47.7% rise year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, import value surged by 115.4%, with an average annual growth of 29.1%. The lowest value was in 2018 at 18 924 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 9.3%. The most significant increase was in 2019, at 60.6%.
