The Ukrainian market for fresh apples, pears, and quinces began the period at a high volume of 1.6 million tons in 2018, supported by state grants for horticulture introduced that year to boost domestic production capacity. A sharp contraction to 1.3 million tons followed in 2019, a year which also saw the adoption of new product quality and labeling standards for fresh fruit under DСТУ 8133:2015. The market stabilized around 1.3 million tons in 2020, as reduced apple imports due to lower demand and currency depreciation limited supply, while rising costs for fertilizers and energy began pressuring producers.

Market volume recovered to nearly 1.45 million tons in 2021, driven by the continued state grant program supporting orchard farms. The outbreak of war in 2022 then led to a significant drop to 1.24 million tons, as logistical difficulties, energy blackouts, and soaring costs for inputs disrupted both production and import flows. Despite unfavorable weather conditions reducing yields in 2023, the market grew slightly to 1.29 million tons, with new export opportunities to the Middle East and Romania emerging in response to lower European production, alongside the introduction of specific color requirements for apples destined for the Indian market.

Between 2017 and 2020, Ukraine was one of the world's leading producers of apples, pears, and quinces, ranking 11th globally by production volume.

Ukraine's production of apples, pears, and quinces declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 1 273 thousand tonnes, marking a 3.3% decrease from 2019. The largest drop occurred in 2019, with a 20.4% decline, while the highest production was recorded in 2018 at 1 653 thousand tonnes, which represented a 32.4% increase from the previous year.

The market showed significant fluctuations during this period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2020 at 19 411 tonnes, a sharp 63.8% drop from the previous year. In contrast, the peak was in 2019 with 53 673 tonnes, resulting in a 2.8-fold difference between the high and low points. The largest increase occurred in 2018, rising by 80.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Belarus, Austria, and Moldova were the top destinations for Ukraine's exports of apples, pears, and quinces in volume terms. Belarus accounted for 39.2% of exports, Austria for 12.7%, and Moldova for 10.7%, together making up 62.6% of total export flows.

The market displayed an unstable trend over the timeframe. Exports in value terms hit their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2019, with a 2.5-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Ukraine exported 9 689 thousand US dollars' worth of apples, pears, and quinces, reflecting a 43.9% loss from the previous year. The maximum value was 17 257 thousand US dollars in 2019, and the largest increase was in 2018, surging by 119.7%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Ukraine's exports of apples, pears, and quinces in value terms were widely distributed across partner countries. Belarus led with 32.1% of exports, followed by Austria at 9.0% and the United Arab Emirates at 8.5%. Together, these three countries represented 49.6% of total export flows.

The largest drop was in 2018, falling by 89.7%, while the biggest increase occurred in 2019, jumping by 574.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Poland remained the primary source for Ukraine's imports of apples, pears, and quinces in volume terms, accounting for 83.9% of total import flows. The rest was spread across various smaller markets.

The largest decline was in 2018, dropping by 77.4%, while the largest increase was in 2019, rising by 259.1%.

Over the 2017–2020 period, Poland and the Netherlands consistently dominated Ukraine's imports of apples, pears, and quinces in value terms, together accounting for 80.1% of total import flows. This indicates a high degree of market concentration, with the remaining share distributed among a long tail of smaller markets.
