Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh plums and sloes in Ukraine fluctuated between 2018 and 2021. Starting at 198.9 thousand tonnes in 2018, the market volume declined to 183.9 thousand tonnes in 2019 and further to 176.5 thousand tonnes in 2020, before recovering to 191.5 thousand tonnes in 2021.

In 2022, the market contracted sharply to 169.2 thousand tonnes, primarily due to the disruption caused by military actions in Ukraine, which affected agricultural production and logistics for fresh fruits. The following year, the market stabilized at 165.9 thousand tonnes. This stabilization was supported by a shift in consumer preferences towards fresh and chilled food products, stimulating demand for plums and sloes. New labeling requirements mandating the country of origin also helped promote domestic producers, while increased competition from new market players and higher imports added to the market dynamics.

In 2024, new food labeling rules were introduced from May 2024, further strengthening origin labeling, and export licensing requirements were eased for most agricultural producers. Ongoing military actions continued to pose logistical challenges for the market.
