The market volume for fresh grapes in Jordan exhibited significant fluctuations from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 60 536 tonnes in 2018, it declined consistently to a low of 38 222 tonnes in 2021, followed by a recovery to 46 750 tonnes in 2022 before dropping again to 39 052 tonnes in 2023.

Domestic production, the primary component of market supply, mirrored this pattern, falling from 59 755 tonnes in 2018 to 39 361 tonnes in 2021 and then rising to 46 103 tonnes in 2022. Imports and exports remained relatively modest, with annual imports staying below 2 000 tonnes and exports varying between 668 and 2 364 tonnes.

In 2024, several factors were observed in the Jordanian context, including a shift in consumer preferences toward fresh and organic produce and reduced rainfall in key agricultural regions like Irbid, Al-Balqa, and Madaba. The period also recorded an increase in registered companies and lower food inflation, reflecting broader economic dynamics.

Jordan's fresh grape production declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 43 003 tonnes, marking a 20.2% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 19.6%, which translates to an average annual decline of 7.0%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 59 755 tonnes, with the largest year-on-year increase of 11.7% also occurring that year.

Exports fresh grapes from Jordan

After two years of growth, Jordan's fresh grape exports dropped in 2020. Exports amounted to 668 tonnes, down 21.9% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 32.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.8%. The peak export volume was recorded in 2019 at 854 tonnes, while the largest year-on-year increase of 51.5% occurred in 2018.

From 2017 to 2020, Oman, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia were the top destinations for Jordan's fresh grape exports by volume. Oman accounted for 26.1% of exports, Kuwait for 26.0%, and Saudi Arabia for 24.6%. Together, these three countries represented 76.7% of total export flows.

Jordan's fresh grape exports in value terms grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 2 142 thousand US dollars, a 26.4% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value rose by 92.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 24.4%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Oman were the leading buyers of Jordanian fresh grapes by value. Kuwait accounted for 28.2% of export value, Saudi Arabia for 25.3%, and Oman for 21.8%. Collectively, these three markets made up 75.4% of total export value.

Imports fresh grapes to Jordan

Jordan's fresh grape imports decreased to 1 112 tonnes in 2020, a 39.6% drop from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 40%, with a compound annual decline rate of 15.7%. The largest year-on-year increase of 19.0% was recorded in 2019.

From 2017 to 2020, Lebanon, Italy, and South Africa were the primary suppliers of fresh grapes to Jordan by volume. Lebanon accounted for 52.6% of imports, Italy for 18.3%, and South Africa for 10.5%. Together, these three countries supplied 81.4% of total import volume.

In 2020, Jordan's fresh grape imports in value terms amounted to 2 597 thousand US dollars, reflecting a 15.0% decrease compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, import value declined by 23.1%, averaging an 8.4% annual decrease. The lowest import value was recorded in 2018 at 2 505 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest year-on-year decline of 25.8%. In contrast, the largest increase of 22.1% occurred in 2019.

Over the 2017-2020 period, Lebanon, Italy, and South Africa were the main sources of Jordan's fresh grape imports by value. Lebanon accounted for 46.4% of import value, Italy for 22.4%, and South Africa for 11.6%. Combined, these three countries represented 80.5% of total import value.
