The Jordanian banana market volume demonstrated strong growth, rising from 55 thousand tons in 2018 to 89.6 thousand tons in 2023. This expansion was briefly interrupted in 2021 when the market stabilized at 74 thousand tons following a significant increase the previous year.

Domestic production more than doubled from its 2019 level to reach 62.5 thousand tons in 2023, reducing the market's dependence on imports. Import volumes fluctuated considerably during this period, peaking at 43 thousand tons in 2020 before moderating.

In 2024, banana imports rose to 33.6 thousand tons. Market dynamics this year included elevated global banana prices and active government provision of technical advice to local growers aimed at enhancing production efficiency.

In 2020, Jordan produced 32 976 tonnes of bananas, which remained virtually unchanged compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 2.8%, averaging an annual decline of 1.0%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 32 803 tonnes, while the highest was in 2018 at 35 456 tonnes. The most significant drop occurred in 2019 with a 7.5% decrease, whereas the largest increase was in 2018 at 4.5%.

Banana exports from Jordan increased for the third consecutive year in 2020, reaching 1 260 tonnes. This represents a substantial rise of 189.0% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 576.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 89.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Kuwait consistently led Jordan's banana export structure in terms of volume. Saudi Arabia accounted for 57.5% of exports, Sudan for 20.1%, and Kuwait for 7.8%. Together, these three countries represented 85.4% of total export flows.

The market performance for banana exports from Jordan showed noticeable fluctuations during this period. The lowest point was in 2017, while exports peaked in 2019, with a 2.6-fold difference between these years. In 2020, banana exports totaled 316 thousand US dollars, marking a sharp decline of 26.2% compared to 2019. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 429 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 109.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Egypt were the top buyers of Jordanian bananas in value terms. Saudi Arabia led with 60.7% of exports, followed by Sudan at 12.9%, and Egypt at 7.0%. Combined, these three countries accounted for 80.6% of total export value.

Jordan's banana imports increased for the second consecutive year in 2020, with a total of 30 000 tonnes imported, up by 53.3% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports rose by 46.9%, averaging an annual growth rate of 13.7%. The lowest import volume was in 2018 at 19 820 tonnes, which also experienced the largest decline of 32.4%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan were the main sources for Jordan's banana imports in terms of volume. Ecuador contributed 40.6% of imports, Saudi Arabia 25.1%, and Sudan 17.7%. Together, these three countries made up 83.5% of total import flows.

Foreign banana supplies to Jordan increased for the second consecutive year in 2020, with imports amounting to 31 452 thousand US dollars, a rise of 46.7% over the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 36%, with a compound annual growth rate of 10.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 14 720 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 36.4%.

In the 2017-2020 period, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan were the primary sources in the geographical breakdown of banana imports to Jordan in value terms. Ecuador accounted for 38.3% of imports, Saudi Arabia for 26.3%, and Sudan for 18.8%. Collectively, these three countries represented 83.4% of total import flows.
