The Armenian fresh grape market expanded strongly from 2018 to 2020, with domestic production rising from 179.7 thousand tons to 283.2 thousand tons. This surge lifted the total market volume by 56% over the two-year period, reaching 276.1 thousand tons.

Following the 2020 peak, the market entered a phase of gradual contraction. Production declined to 213.4 thousand tons by 2023, leading the market volume to fall to 209.0 thousand tons, which was 24% below its highest level.

Throughout this period, imports and exports of fresh grapes remained at very low levels, confirming that the market's size was almost entirely determined by the fluctuations in domestic output.

Armenia's fresh grape production increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 283.2 thousand tons of fresh grapes, marking a significant 30.2% year-over-year improvement. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 34.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 10.5%. The lowest production volume was recorded in 2018 at 179.7 thousand tons, which also saw the largest decline of 14.4%.

Exports fresh grapes from Armenia

The market displayed volatility during the observed period. Import levels fluctuated 2.1 times between the low of 2019 and the high of 2020. In 2020, Armenia exported 8,380 tons of fresh grapes, representing a 107.2% increase compared to the previous year. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 4,045 tons, which also experienced the largest decline of 38.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia was the nearly exclusive buyer of fresh grapes from Armenia, accounting for 99.7% of total exports in volume terms.

Armenia's fresh grape import volumes declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 1,303 tons, reflecting a sharp 48.0% decrease compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 69.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of -32.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey clearly dominated as the supplier of fresh grapes to Armenia, accounting for 90.7% of total imports in volume terms.
