Earlier Report Observations
The market for fresh grapes in Brazil experienced a decline in volume from 1 571 thousand tons in 2018 to 1 394 thousand tons in 2020. This reduction was primarily driven by a strategic shift towards export markets, notably fueled by the successful opening of the United States market for Brazilian grapes and the further redirection of supply abroad during the COVID-19 pandemic, which constrained domestic availability.
Market volume rebounded to 1 677 thousand tons in 2021, supported by a surge in domestic production and the continued dominance of the Vale do São Francisco region as the country's main export hub. In 2022, volume contracted again to 1 406 thousand tons, a period marked by the El Niño climate phenomenon which disrupted production in competing countries and coincided with Brazil's focused efforts to secure new export opportunities, including anticipated access to the Chinese market, alongside an expansion of vineyard area in the Central-West region.
A significant recovery followed in 2023, with the market reaching 1 771 thousand tons, indicating robust growth in production capacity, potentially aided by ongoing varietal developments such as the BRS Tainá grape cultivated for the Northeast and sustained investments in cultivation.
