Earlier Report Observations

Brazil's fresh pear market volume declined from 177.9 thousand tons in 2018 to 136.5 thousand tons in 2021. This contraction was primarily driven by reduced imports, which fell from 158.1 to 120.8 thousand tons over the same period. The accelerated drop in 2020-2021 coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, which introduced safety measures and logistical disruptions across the fruit supply chain. Domestic production remained persistently low, around 15-20 thousand tons annually, due to a lack of cultivars adapted to local conditions and post-harvest handling challenges, keeping the country reliant on foreign supply.

Market recovery began in 2022, with volume reaching 150.5 thousand tons, and further growth to 174.2 thousand tons in 2023. The rebound was supported by a shift in consumer preferences toward healthy and organic foods, boosting demand for fresh fruits like pears. Despite ongoing post-harvest losses estimated at 30% and logistical constraints, import volumes increased to meet the rising consumption, reaching 158.6 thousand tons in 2023.

Brazil's pear market continues to depend heavily on imports, which rose to 169.2 thousand tons in 2024. The broader fruit and vegetable sector in the country has benefited from technological advances and economic growth, creating opportunities for improved logistics and reduced waste. However, domestic pear production has not expanded significantly, constrained by limited suitable varieties and the need for better orchard management practices.
