Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, Brazil's citrus fruit market volume grew from 38 743 thousand tons to 39 284 thousand tons. This increase was driven by São Paulo, which produces 80% of the country's oranges, where modern farming techniques and equipment raised yields by 5%. Simultaneously, rising consumer preference for freshly squeezed orange juice bolstered domestic demand for table fruit.

The market dipped to 37 665 thousand tons by 2021 despite heightened demand for citrus fruits during the COVID-19 pandemic, which amplified health and immunity concerns. During this period, the industry maintained strong orange juice exports—about 95% of production—while the National Confederation of Agriculture worked to reduce the tax burden on natural juices and open new export markets.

Market volume rebounded to 39 356 thousand tons in 2022 and reached 40 898 thousand tons in 2023. The Russian invasion of Ukraine disrupted global citrus supply, creating export opportunities for Brazil. Dry weather in some regions reduced harvest quality and volume, lifting prices, and a sectoral project by ApexBrasil and CitrusBr invested US$ 1.56 million to promote Brazilian orange juice in Europe. Paraná also expanded its citrus area, diversifying into specialty juices.
