Earlier Report Observations

The walnut market volume in Brazil contracted from approximately 11 000 t in 2018 to around 8 400 t in 2020. This decline coincided with reported production challenges that led the sector to seek support from Embrapa to overcome bottlenecks. The establishment of the Brazilian Association of Nuts and Chestnuts (ABNC) in 2020 aimed to strengthen the sector by unifying producers and addressing these structural issues.

Market recovery began in 2021, with volume reaching 9 600 t, and continued growth to over 12 700 t by 2023. This expansion was driven by rising consumer incomes, particularly in the C class, which broadened access, coupled with ongoing efforts to promote the health benefits of nuts, stimulating domestic demand. Significant investments in production capacity and favorable climatic conditions in growing regions further supported the supply side during this period.

The sector gained momentum in 2024 with the opening of the Chinese market for Brazilian pecans and access to new international destinations like South Korea and Thailand, strengthening export prospects. Institutional efforts continued into 2025, with steps to formalize Integrated Pecan Production with the Ministry of Agriculture, facilitating market access and supporting sector development.
