Earlier Report Observations

The Iranian dried shelled beans market volume grew strongly from 147.5 thousand tons in 2018 to 188.4 thousand tons in 2019. This expansion was underpinned by a significant rise in domestic production, which increased from 109.6 to 150.0 thousand tons, as bean cultivation saw remarkable growth across several provinces. Market activity was further supported by active high-quality producers and the development of online sales channels.

Market volume subsequently became more volatile, declining to 173.7 thousand tons in 2020. This contraction coincided with reported economic changes that led to price fluctuations and a sharp reduction in imports. A recovery to 183.7 thousand tons followed in 2021, facilitated by increased domestic output of high-quality beans in fertile regions and a resumed flow of imports to supply the domestic market. However, the market contracted again to 163.2 thousand tons in 2022 as domestic production fell significantly, a period marked by rising production costs and inflation which pressured producer margins.

In 2023, the market rebounded to 173.0 thousand tons. This recovery aligned with improved economic conditions and a renewed increase in domestic production, allowing producers to offer high-quality beans at more competitive prices. Pinto beans remained the most consumed variety in Iranian households, providing a stable demand base.
