Earlier Report Observations

Following a 2017 export blockage to India, the Mozambican government introduced new reference prices for the 2018/19 campaign to support local bean growers. This move coincided with a rise in production and market volume to 466 тыс. т in 2019, though persistent export quotas to India and chronic challenges like irregular rainfall and poor seed quality constrained further growth. The market volume then declined to 397 тыс. т in 2020.

A pivotal shift occurred in 2021 when Mozambique and India agreed to temporarily lift the annual export quota of 200 тыс. т, opening the Indian market to nearly all Mozambican production. This triggered a surge in exports to 97 тыс. т. While domestic production also increased, the sharp rise in shipments abroad meant the local market size expanded only marginally to 403 тыс. т that year.

Production continued its upward trajectory in the following years, reaching 632 тыс. т by 2023. This growth was underpinned by the suspension of the export limit to India until March 2024, allowing producers to sell freely. Exports remained high, with India as the primary destination, while the domestic market volume grew to 557 тыс. т by 2023. Legal disputes involving export companies like the ETG group added complexity, but the foundational trade agreement with India continued to define market dynamics, with reports of sustained exports and high international prices into 2024.
