In 2018, the ASEAN dried shelled beans market reached 3.2 million tons, supported by the entry of new players and product innovations that catered to health-conscious consumers seeking plant-based proteins and convenience foods. However, market volume then entered a period of contraction, declining to 2.4 million tons by 2020.

The downward trend continued through 2021 and 2022, with the market volume falling to 2.0 million tons in 2022. A rebound occurred in 2023, when volume recovered to 2.3 million tons, driven by the rising popularity of plant-based diets and the expansion of food processing industries that increased the use of beans in ready-to-eat meals and snacks.

In 2020, the region produced 3,367 thousand tonnes, which represents a 0.9% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 6.2%, with an average annual decline of 2.1%.

After two years of decline, ASEAN's exports of dried shelled beans increased in 2020, reaching 1,187 thousand tonnes. This marks a significant 41.0% rise compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 12.7%, translating to an average annual growth rate of 4.1%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 842 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 19.0% during this period.

Between 2017 and 2020, three key markets—India, China, and Pakistan—collectively accounted for 64.5% of ASEAN's total exports of dried shelled beans by volume.

ASEAN's exports of dried shelled beans in value terms increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 1,151 million US dollars, reflecting a 39.4% increase compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 32.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 9.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 664 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 23.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, India, China, and Pakistan were the main destinations for ASEAN's dried shelled bean exports in value terms, accounting for 30.9%, 29.1%, and 4.6% of total exports, respectively. Together, these three countries represented 64.7% of the total export value.

Imports dried shelled beans to ASEAN

ASEAN's imports of dried shelled beans showed significant volatility between 2017 and 2020. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 96 thousand tonnes, which saw the largest decline of 87.0%. In contrast, imports peaked in 2018 at 739 thousand tonnes, marking the largest increase of 371.7%. By 2020, imports rebounded to 234 thousand tonnes, representing a sharp 144.7% increase compared to 2019. The gap between the peak in 2018 and the trough in 2019 was 7.7-fold.

Between 2017 and 2020, ASEAN's imports of dried shelled beans by volume were highly diversified. The top three partners—Ethiopia, China, and Australia—accounted for 10.6%, 8.8%, and 7.0% of total imports, respectively, totaling only 26.4%. The remaining 73.6% was distributed among numerous smaller markets.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 43.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 12.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 246 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 3.0%.
