Earlier Report Observations

The fresh tomato market in Iran began the period at 4.4 million tons in 2018. In 2019 and 2020, a concerted push to boost exports, including a reduction of the export duty from 30% to 10%, increased shipments abroad. This export growth coincided with tightened international sanctions, which dampened farmers' incentive to harvest, contributing to an initial decline in domestic market volume.

From 2021 onward, severe weather events became a primary constraint on supply. Heavy rains and frosts in key growing regions damaged crops, leading to significant harvest shortfalls. These production challenges were compounded by continued export-oriented policies and internal market regulation efforts, driving the market volume down further to 2.7 million tons by 2023.

Throughout these years, the industry landscape evolved with the activation of numerous tomato paste production lines and new processing plants in regions like southern Kerman, reflecting a structural shift towards value-added segments even as the fresh market contracted.
