Iran's aubergine market volume contracted from 465 thousand tons in 2018 to 428 thousand tons in 2022. This decline was primarily driven by a depreciating local currency, which made Iranian aubergines more competitive abroad and fueled a steady rise in exports, reducing domestic availability despite stable production levels around 595-605 thousand tons annually.

Trade disruptions and regulatory changes added further pressure. Iraq periodically imposed restrictions on imports of Iranian aubergines, while new packaging, labeling, and product traceability rules introduced between 2020 and 2023 increased compliance costs for producers. The market saw a slight recovery to 434 thousand tons in 2023, aided by a temporary dip in exports and the expansion of alternative export destinations such as Russia, Qatar, and the UAE.
