Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, the Indonesian market for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts experienced a steady contraction in both domestic production and total market volume. The period began with the recognition of the crop's drought tolerance and significant growth potential, yet actual output was hampered by a persistent gap between achievable and on-farm yields, limiting production expansion from the outset. Weather conditions further impacted harvest cycles in 2019, contributing to the initial decline in output.

In the following years, the downward trend in production continued. By 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture implemented initiatives to integrate farmers into the value chain and support exports in an effort to reverse the decline. However, these measures contended with deep-rooted structural challenges, including farmers' constrained access to subsidized fertilizers, inadequate road infrastructure hindering distribution, and a reported preference among processing companies for imported raw groundnuts over domestic supplies.

By 2023, annual production had fallen to 640 thousand tons, reflecting the cumulative effect of yield limitations, logistical bottlenecks, and market dynamics that favored imports, which collectively shaped the market's contraction over the six-year period.
