Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2019, copra production in Cameroon remained steady at approximately 938 tons annually. This period saw the implementation of a new Public Procurement Code (Decree No. 2018/366), which standardized state purchasing rules and could have supported market stability. The situation changed in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted agricultural supply chains and food security, leading to a drop in production to 895 tons.
Production saw a further, smaller decline to 872 tons in 2021 as the sector continued to adjust, while government support for local SMEs and industries was reinforced to stimulate domestic supply. A significant rebound occurred in 2022, with output rising to 934 tons. This recovery was driven by several factors: broader economic growth of 4.3%, public investment in modernizing market infrastructure like the Mokolo market in Yaoundé, and the publication of an official list of approved fertilizers which may have improved farming practices for coconut growers.
By 2023, copra production stabilized at 931 tons, indicating a return to near pre-pandemic market volumes.
