Earlier Report Observations

Castor seed production in Indonesia remained stable at around 1,400 tons in 2018 and 2019, supported by government biofuel initiatives. State-owned enterprises like Pertamina and RNI were instructed to procure castor seeds from farmers, while a national program aimed at planting 10 million hectares of castor since 2009 encouraged area expansion. Private companies such as Eterindo and D1 Oils also partnered with local producers for crude castor oil processing.

From 2020 onward, production entered a steep decline, falling to 1,222 tons in 2020 and dropping further to 578 tons by 2022. Market size followed the same trend, shrinking from 1,407 tons in 2019 to 544 tons in 2023.

Despite the earlier procurement by state-owned companies and growing export demand for castor oil, domestic castor seed output could not sustain its previous levels. By 2023, the market volume had contracted to less than half of its 2018 size.
