Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, coconut production in French Polynesia remained stable at 84 thousand tons. During this period, initiatives to develop the coconut value chain were undertaken, including a coconut seminar organized by the Pacific Community and the local agriculture department in 2019, aiming to enhance the sector's value and develop high-value-added products. A project to export 40,000 coconuts to Mayotte was also launched to support agricultural recovery there.

In 2022, the market volume slightly decreased to 83 thousand tons, reflecting general stabilization. That year, the Ha’ari contest was launched to identify and promote local coconut varieties, involving over 2,000 farmers and covering 29,015 hectares of land, with the goal of improving the copra chain and increasing productivity.

Production surged to 100 thousand tons in 2023. This growth was driven by the implementation of an import ban on coconut water, virgin coconut oil, and coconut milk effective from late March 2023, which shielded local producers from foreign competition. Concurrently, efforts continued to diversify coconut products beyond traditional copra, including developing markets for coconut water, milk, and oil.
