The wine and wine products market in Northern Africa contracted from 138 325 t in 2018 to 118 681 t in 2020. This decline was influenced by regulatory measures in Algeria, where the 2018 Finance Law introduced a 5% excise tax on alcohol and wine, moving them from exemption to taxable status, while an executive decree temporarily suspended imports of wine and other goods, reducing supply.

Market volume recovered from 2021, reaching 133 774 t by 2023. The rapid expansion of an emerging middle class in Morocco drove increased wine consumption across the country, supporting growth. During this period, the Moroccan market remained highly concentrated, with two state-linked groups controlling approximately 60% of national volume. Algeria further raised fiscal pressure on the sector by increasing the circulation duty on alcohol and wine by an additional 5% in 2023.

In 2024, Morocco implemented new licensing requirements for alcohol-selling establishments, imposing stricter authorization procedures for bars, restaurants, and retail outlets. Concurrently, 2023 data highlighted a regional demand shift, with Côte d'Ivoire emerging as Africa's top wine importer.

Northern Africa's production of wine and wine products declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 77.3 K t, which represents a 14.0% decrease compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 17.5%, with an average annual decline of 6.2%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 97.7 K t, which also saw the largest annual increase of 4.4%.

In 2020, Northern Africa exported 4 276 t of wine and wine products, a drop of 37.4% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 54.2%, translating to an average annual decline of 22.9%. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with a rise of 7.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, France was the dominant market for Northern Africa's wine and wine product exports in kind, accounting for 78.0% of total flows, while other countries made up the remaining share.

After two years of growth, Northern Africa's wine and wine product exports in value terms declined. In 2020, exports amounted to 17.6 M $ US, a sharp decrease of 47.9% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 40.9%, with an average annual decline of 16.1%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 33.8 M $ US, which also saw the largest increase of 10.1%.

Following two years of growth, Northern Africa's wine and wine product imports in kind declined. In 2020, imports totaled 45 691 t, a significant drop of 12.0% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 23.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 7.4%. The highest import volume was in 2019 at 51 934 t, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 27.3%.
