The Jamaican market for wheat bran, sharps and residues experienced notable fluctuations in volume from 2018 to 2023. After growing to 34 955 t in 2019, the market contracted significantly over the next two years, falling to 28 970 t in 2021. This was followed by a recovery to 32 343 t in 2022, before a slight moderation to 31 246 t in 2023.

Domestic production, the primary source of supply, mirrored this pattern, peaking at 36 384 t in 2019 and then declining. The very low level of imports throughout the period meant that changes in domestic output were the main driver of market size. Export volumes, while a smaller share of production, also varied, declining notably after 2021.

Jamaica's production of wheat bran, sharps, and residues saw a two-year increase before declining. In 2019, production reached its peak at 36 384 tonnes. However, by 2020, output had fallen to 32 879 tonnes, marking a moderate decrease of 9.6% compared to the previous year. The most significant production growth occurred in 2018, with an 8.7% increase.

The export market for wheat bran, sharps, and residues from Jamaica exhibited notable volatility during the observed period. Exports hit their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2020, showing a 5.2-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Jamaica exported 2 446 tonnes, representing a substantial year-over-year gain of 71.1%. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 at 19.9%, while the most significant increase occurred in 2018 with a dramatic 279.9% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, Jamaica's exports of wheat bran, sharps, and residues were dominated by three key destinations. Trinidad and Tobago led the way, accounting for 65.6% of exports in kind, followed by Grenada at 9.3% and Ecuador at 9.1%. Together, these three countries represented 84.0% of Jamaica's total export flows in this category.

In 2020, exports reached 505.7 thousand US dollars, showing a steep uptick of 112.3% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, export value grew by 421.8%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 73.4%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the value of Jamaica's wheat bran, sharps, and residues exports was primarily driven by three countries. Trinidad and Tobago contributed 57.8% of the total export value, while Ecuador and Grenada each accounted for 14.1%.
