Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for wheat bran and residues in South Africa fluctuated between 703 and 736 thousand tons from 2018 to 2023. After a decline to 711.5 thousand tons in 2019, the market stabilized around 703 thousand tons in 2020 before recovering to 736 thousand tons in 2021. This recovery was supported by the largest wheat harvest since 2002 in the 2021/22 season, which increased raw material availability for milling and bran production, although high input costs limited more rapid expansion.

Import volumes of bran and residues showed considerable variation, dropping to 114.1 thousand tons in 2019 before rising to a peak of 148.2 thousand tons in 2024. The rand exchange rate remained a key factor, as a weaker rand increased import costs and supported local prices. Tariffs on imported wheat, maintained to protect the domestic industry, influenced market access and the cost structure for millers, affecting the balance between domestic production and imports of bran.

The milling sector underwent structural changes, with increased competition as major players sold assets and smaller millers gained market share. Ongoing support from the Winter Grains Trust for research and funding in the winter grains sector contributed to long-term market development. By 2025, the industry was in a consolidation phase following the volatility of earlier years, with global wheat supply conditions and domestic input costs continuing to shape profitability.
