Wheat bran, sharps and residues market in France

The French market for wheat bran, sharps and residues contracted significantly between 2018 and 2023, with total volume falling from 894 thousand tons to 753 thousand tons. The most severe drop occurred in 2020, when the market shrank by 18% to 665 thousand tons, marking a low point for the period.

This sharp contraction was driven by a substantial increase in exports, which grew from 289 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 434 thousand tons in 2021, diverting a larger share of production abroad. At the same time, domestic production trended downward, declining from 1,143 thousand tons to 1,055 thousand tons over the six-year span, which further limited the supply available for the local market.

A partial recovery followed after 2020, with the market volume rising to 758 thousand tons by 2022. This was supported by a modest rebound in production and a decrease in export volumes from their 2021 high. However, the market stabilized at a level well below its pre-2020 size, as exports remained elevated above 300 thousand tons per year.

France's production of wheat bran, sharps, and residues declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, output reached 1 062 K t, marking a 6.1% decrease compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 17%, which translates to an annualized decline rate of 6.0%.

France's export volume of wheat bran, sharps, and residues increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 410.6 K t, showing a strong rise of 17.0% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 5.6%, with an annualized rate of -1.9%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 289.4 K t, which saw the largest decline of 33.5%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the largest increase of 21.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain were the key destinations for France's exports in kind. Belgium accounted for 38.4% of exports, the Netherlands for 32.7%, and Spain for 22.7%, together making up 93.8% of total export flows.

Exports in value, K $ US

After a two-year decline, France's cross-border shipments of wheat bran, sharps, and residues increased. In 2020, exports amounted to 52 609 K $ US, up by 26.3% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 15%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 41 642 K $ US, which also saw the largest decline of 5.4%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands were the main buyers of wheat bran, sharps, and residues from France in value terms. Belgium represented 39.4% of exports, Spain 27.3%, and the Netherlands 24.5%, collectively comprising 91.2% of total export value.

The maximum import volume was recorded in 2018 at 40.3 K t, which also saw the largest increase of 74.8%.

In 2020, France imported 4 606 K $ US of wheat bran, sharps, and residues, down by 37.8% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 29%, equating to an annualized decline rate of 10.8%. The highest import value was recorded in 2019 at 7 403 K $ US, which also experienced the largest increase of 15.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany remained the leading destinations in France's import structure in value terms. Belgium accounted for 39.3% of imports, the Netherlands for 20.6%, and Germany for 15.3%, with a combined share of 75.1% of total import flows.
