From 2018 to 2023, the wheat bran market in Ghana showed considerable volatility. Starting at 106.7 thousand tons in 2018, it dropped to 83.0 thousand tons in 2019, then recovered to peak at 113.1 thousand tons in 2021.

The market then declined to 107.6 thousand tons in 2022 and fell sharply to 68.2 thousand tons in 2023. This drop in 2023 coincided with a decrease in domestic production to 91.7 thousand tons, while exports remained significant at 25.9 thousand tons and imports were modest at 2.5 thousand tons.

Throughout the period, exports played a key role, reaching 47.3 thousand tons in 2019, which affected domestic availability. Imports were minimal until 2021 when they rose to 7.8 thousand tons, but later decreased.

Ghana's production of wheat bran, sharps, and residues rebounded after a two-year decline. In 2020, output reached 149.9 K t, marking a solid 15.1% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.0%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 130.2 K t, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 with a 12.7% drop.

In 2020, the value of Ghana's wheat bran, sharps, and residues production was 13 215 K $ US, representing a significant 40.1% advance compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production value increased by 38.2%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 11.4%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 9 429 K $ US, which also saw the largest decline of 9.1%.

Ghana exported 40 805 t of wheat bran, sharps, and residues in 2020, which is 13.6% less than in 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 10.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.5%. The minimum export volume was recorded in 2018 at 32 595 t, while the maximum was in 2019 at 47 255 t, which also saw the largest increase of 45.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main buyers of Ghana's wheat bran, sharps, and residues in kind were Niger (55.2% of exports), Turkey (19.3%), and Morocco (12.1%). Together, these three countries accounted for 86.6% of total exports in kind.

Ghana's exports of wheat bran, sharps, and residues in value terms increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 3 597 K $ US, up by 5.1% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 63%, equating to an annualized rate of 17.7%.

Throughout 2017-2020, the three largest markets for Ghana's wheat bran, sharps, and residues in value terms were Niger, Ireland, and Turkey, collectively accounting for 75.3% of total export flows.
