Earlier Report Observations

The market for wheat bran, sharps and residues in Tunisia saw domestic production increase from 363.8 thousand tons in 2018 to 384.5 thousand tons in 2021, while imports fell from 88.3 to 70.2 thousand tons over the same period. This pushed total market volume to a peak of 454.7 thousand tons in 2021. The market operated under a strongly interventionist state policy that regulated local grain supplies.

A contraction began in 2022, with market volume dropping to 415.5 thousand tons and then to 412.5 thousand tons in 2023. Production declined over these two years, influenced by persistent drought that reduced cereal yields and constrained the supply of milling by-products. The same period saw the inauguration of a workshop for finished products from ancient wheat varieties, reflecting a shift toward value-added processing. Imports fell sharply to 38.0 thousand tons in 2022 before partially recovering to 45.0 thousand tons in 2023.

In 2024, imports of wheat bran and residues reached 61.7 thousand tons. Tunisian authorities implemented measures to boost wheat cultivation, targeting a sown area of 1.17 million hectares for the 2024/2025 season and setting guaranteed base prices to encourage farmer delivery. However, ongoing drought conditions continued to challenge cereal production, with the Cereals Office managing import tenders and collection operations.
