Earlier Report Observations

The domestic market for bran, sharps and residues from cereal or legume processing in Ghana grew from 244.1 thousand tons in 2018 to 295.3 thousand tons in 2023, peaking at 311.3 thousand tons in 2022. This expansion followed a slight dip in 2019 but was marked by strong growth through 2020 and 2021.

The increase in market volume was primarily supported by a significant rise in domestic production, which climbed from 285.8 thousand tons to 336.1 thousand tons between 2018 and 2021. Simultaneously, a steep reduction in export volumes, falling from 55.6 thousand tons in 2019 to 26.1 thousand tons in 2023, freed up substantial supply for the local market.

While imports played a minor role overall, a notable increase to 8.3 thousand tons in 2021 provided an additional boost to market volume that year. The subsequent market softening in 2023 corresponded with a moderation in production levels.
