Earlier Report Observations

From 2018, watermelon cultivation area in Asia began to contract, but technological advances in protected cultivation and a gradual shift of production regions helped maintain output. Government support for agricultural stability and the promotion of new varieties mitigated supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, supporting market volume.

Consumer preferences steadily shifted toward seedless and mini watermelon varieties, driven by the rise of single-person households and demand for convenient, high-quality fruit. This trend accelerated from 2021, with exceptionally hot weather in 2023 boosting consumption. The expansion of online sales channels provided a new avenue for market access and product diversification.

A sharp decline in watermelon imports by 2022 reflected strengthened domestic production capabilities. Ongoing breeding efforts for improved varieties, along with provincial branding initiatives, added value to the market. The focus on seedless and mini varieties continued into 2024, supported by government promotion and persistent weather-related demand.
