Earlier Report Observations
The orange market in Asia expanded from 22.0 million tons in 2018 to 23.9 million tons in 2023, driven primarily by rising domestic production. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 boosted demand for citrus fruits globally, supporting consumption and encouraging local output. Subsequent years saw continued production gains, aided by favorable growing conditions in key regions and increased processing demand for orange juice, as reflected in Brazil's expanded concentrate production.
Global supply shocks, including hurricanes in Florida and droughts in Europe during 2022, tightened worldwide orange availability and raised prices. These events, coupled with EU restrictions on imports of South African citrus, altered trade flows and may have incentivized Asian producers to increase output. Despite a slight stabilization in 2022, the market resumed strong growth in 2023, with production reaching 22.8 million tons.
The substantial production increase in 2023 coincided with reported orchard expansion in Brazil and improved climatic conditions, suggesting similar supportive factors in Asia. Additionally, heightened demand for Navel and Valencia oranges in North America provided export opportunities, though Asian exports declined as more fruit was absorbed domestically.
