The market volume for fresh watermelons in Serbia experienced considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 202.4 thousand tonnes in 2018, it contracted to 170.6 thousand tonnes the following year and further to 160.5 thousand tonnes in 2020. A recovery phase began in 2021, with the market growing to 167.2 thousand tonnes, followed by a substantial surge to 190.9 thousand tonnes in 2022. This upward trajectory reversed in 2023, when volume fell back to 170.8 thousand tonnes.

Domestic production followed a similar pattern, declining from 199.4 thousand tonnes in 2018 to a low of 141.3 thousand tonnes in 2020 before rebounding to 183.6 thousand tonnes in 2022 and then decreasing again in 2023. The market's movements were closely tied to these shifts in local output over the period.

Serbia's watermelon production has declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, production reached 141.3 K t, showing a significant drop of 13.6% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 42.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of -17.1%.

Exports watermelons from Serbia

After a two-year decline, Serbia's watermelon export volume increased in 2020. The export volume was recorded at 4 310 t, which is 27.3% higher than in 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 10.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of -3.7%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 3 386 t, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 27.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany (28.9% of exports in kind), Slovenia (18.1%), and Czechia (16.9%) were the key destinations for Serbia's watermelon exports, together accounting for 63.9% of total flows.

Serbia's watermelon exports in value terms increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 1 824 K $ US, indicating a sharp rise of 61.0% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 53.1%, equating to an annualized rate of 15.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 1 070 K $ US, with the largest decline that year at 10.2%.

Serbia's watermelon import volume showed noticeable fluctuations during the period. The volume dropped to its lowest point in 2018 at 6 526 t and climbed to its maximum in 2020 at 23 600 t, marking a 3.6-fold increase. In 2020, imports rose by 124.5% compared to 2019. The largest decline was recorded in 2018 at 40.4%.

The value dropped to its minimum in 2018 at 1 892 K $ US and reached its peak in 2020 at 6 174 K $ US, representing a 3.3-fold increase. In 2020, imports showed a steep rise of 69.5% year-over-year. The largest decline occurred in 2018 at 26.9%, while the largest increase was recorded in 2019 at 92.5%.
