Earlier Report Observations

Banana production in Asia increased steadily from 62 511 thousand tons in 2018 to 72 148 thousand tons in 2023, driven by the adoption of high-quality commercial cultivation techniques. These included micro-propagation, drip irrigation, and integrated nutrient management, alongside government promotions and planning drives to boost output. The use of tissue-culture saplings and organic farming further enhanced yields and fruit quality.

The market volume for fresh bananas saw fluctuations between 2020 and 2023. It began at 69 544 thousand tons in 2020, edged down slightly to 69 049 thousand tons in 2021, then rose to 71 815 thousand tons in 2022. A sharp decline to 35 833 thousand tons occurred in 2023, primarily due to a surge in exports to 39 846 thousand tons that year. This export spike was supported by continuous improvements in farming practices and active government export promotion, including the successful exploration of new markets such as Russia.

Imports of bananas declined from 4 140 thousand tons in 2020 to 3 532 thousand tons in 2023, with a slight recovery in 2024. The industry diversified with the emergence of value-added banana products like vacuum-fried chips and banana flour, creating new product segments. Consumer preferences also shifted towards premium and processed banana items, influencing market trends alongside global factors such as supply chain disruptions and changes in international tariffs.
